media outtake #3: Sometimes you have to lose to win again.
Zora Hurston's "Sweat," deals
with a very rocky relationship that goes sour. In “Sweat,” the main
character Delia finds herself in an unappealing relationship. She has a very
antagonistic husband named Sykes, who is out quite often and enjoys laughing at
her pain. Delia is able to provide for herself by washing clothing. In the
beginning of the literary piece, Delia finds herself sorting laundry, the next
thing you know, her husband comes right in and kicks all the clothing together,
after she had just finished sorting them. For some odd reason, her husband
takes it upon himself to torment the main character throughout the
piece. He uses Delia's money to get things for other women and he puts her
feelings last. Overall, he plays a negative role in the short story. However,
there is a big turn of actions in the story, because Sykes gets bitten by
a snake. He calls and pleads for Delia's help, but she let’s herself become
unavailable at the moment. In the end Sykes dies and Delia is freed
from his torment.
The scenario seen in "Sweat," can
be connected to Fantasia's song Lose to Win. In the song, she sings
"You ain't here for dinner!" and in the video, the male playing her
husband is surrounded by other females when he is to be home with Fantasia. In
"Sweat," a very similar scene unfolds. Delia's husband was out
gallivanting with a woman named Bertha instead of being faithful to his wife.
Fantasia sings on "When all you do is fight, Cant get
no sleep at night, Sometimes you gotta Lose to Win again." All Delia did
was argue with Sykes and watch him act up. Delia "lost" in the
beginning of the story when Sykes was man handling her; however she won at the
end because she let him die. Like Fantasia said, she had to lose to win again.
Fantasia "lost," because she was going through a rough time in a
relationship. However, she realized that there are more options out and
available. "Sometimes you gotta lose to win again."
