Fast and Furious

Fast and Furious

After reading the short story “The White Heron” and having a few great discussions in the class last week I found a great connection for this short story. I notice that Sylvia was a poor girl that just moved to the country with her grandmother and was faced with a big dilemma which could change her life financially. As I finished reading I started to think of the movie “Fast and Furious” starring Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. In Fast and Furious Paul Walker goes undercover to bust his target Vin Diesel for a reward from his police staff.
I connected these two together because in the movie and the short story they both faced with a dilemma with the outcome of rewards.  In The White Heron Sylvia could either tell the ornithologist if she had seen the bird that he was looking for or keep the birds where about a secret. In fast and furious Brian was faced with turning his friend in to the cops or keeping their bond and loyalty together and letting him go.  Both Sylvia and Brian wanted to turn in the bird and friend for rewards but as the movie and story progressed they both made a connection forcing them to change their mind. When Sylvia climbed up to the tree to find the bird she found out that the money was not worth killing the bird. When Brian started to build a new relationship with his friend he decided that his friendship was more valuable than a small reward.

At the end of the short story and movie both main characters decided to keep their loyalty toward something they were familiar with. In Fast and the Furious Brian the main character decided he rather keep his loyalty to his new friend that he had acquired rather than turn them in to the police for a reward. And in the short story Sylvia decided to forgo the decision of telling the man where the bird was for money and kept it to herself because she was familiar with the bird and nature.

  1. Great post Rashard, that was a very interesting connection that I did not think about. I have seen the movie Fast and furious and that was a good point to make that both of the main characters had an important decision to make. There is a struggle for both people, life is hard when someone actually thinks about what will happen as a whole rather than what will they get out from this situation. Many people choose the wrong path to head down and can eventually feel guilty for what they did. I saw both characters to be very brave as they did the right thing. Also in both situations the endings show how both make a connection with who they saved. It was a very strong connection that was almost unknown to each of the characters but they took a leap of faith and followed their heart rather than what everyone else wanted them to do.

  2. Your connection between "The White Heron" and "Fast and Furious" is almost too good. The protagonist similarities are very well thought out. Another similarity that comes to mind is freedom. In "The White Heron," because Sylvia did not tell the hunter where she saw the bird, the heron was able to keep its freedom, instead of being killed. Similarly, in "Fast and Furious," because Brian allowed Vin Diesel to get away, he also was letting him keep his freedom by preventing him from going back to prison. I never would have thought about connecting these two seemingly unrelated works. However, after reading your post, I am able to see the connections and even identify additional ones.

  3. When we spoke about the concept in class, I knew that you were getting onto something that could definitely become great! I love your comparison to finding the trust and support within the movie that the young girl finds with the White Heron. I think that it was good to see the relationship between the films two lead characters and the novels; all though I would like to stress that they are on different levels emotionally.
The girl just met the bird, in the fast and furious they had been friends for their entire life.
Still, I’m glad you were able to see the relationship. Also, it’s a great movie!

After reading your post, I can definitely see the connections. Also, your comparison of both, the story and movie's, ending is perfect. Great post! I enjoyed reading your piece. I love that you were thinking out of the box with this one.
