Media Outtake #2- Emily vs old woman in "Big Fish"

In the movie “Big fish,” directed by Tim Burton, there is an old woman that the main character comes across multiple times throughout the movie. I believe that the old woman and Emily are similar because they are both misjudged by the community they live in. They both grow up in the same house their whole lives and slowly become increasingly disengaged in their community, creating rummers and talk about them. In the movie “Big Fish” the kids are scared and curious about the old woman who they believe to be a witch. The feelings shown by the kids towards the woman reflect their societies curiosity and disconnection to the woman, resulting in the rumor that she is a witch. This is similar to the curiosity that the community felt about Emily and her house when she is also old. In “A Rose for Emily” the people who live around her are also constantly talking about her and spreading rumors about her love life and general well being.
In both “Big Fish” and “A Rose for Emily” the women have character changes. When they are young, they are more involved with their community and there is less curiosity and they are more accepted by society. Their age seems to be directly related to their disengagement to their communities. Their love lives are also similar because they only have one main love interest. The protagonist in “Big Fish” is the love interest of the old woman while she is young. However, after spending much time with her, he decides to go back to his wife and kids instead of staying with her. In “A Rose for Emily,” it is inferred that her love interest was also planning on leaving her.
Originally, just the idea of Emily being an old woman in a creepy old house reminded me of the old woman in the movie “Big Fish” because she also was old and had a creepy old house. Once I thought about it further and examined the role of the old woman in the movie I saw that they had much more similarities than I thought.
