Media Outtake #2: Love Is Color Blind

The short story that I will be connecting with media for this week is Black Man White Woman in Dark Green Rowboat by Russell Banks. This story was about an interracial couple that wanted to be together, but others would give them looks when they saw them together. In other words, society was not ready to accept the fact that a black man and white woman were romantically involved. Also the girl had gone through periods of depression and she was seeing a doctor because of that. The media that I will be connecting this to is the movie “Save The Last Dance”, which was directed by Thomas Carter. I found a couple similarities between the two. Both deal with a black man and a white woman who are romantically involved. In “Save The Last Dance” the peers of the main characters were also not accepting of their relationship. Moreover, the woman in this movie also dealt with depression. She was depressed because her mother passed away in a car accident on the way to her dance recital; she blamed herself because of this. Another noteworthy issue is that in the short story the couple was indecisive about having an abortion, which was their man vs. man conflict. In the movie, their conflict was the girl was afraid to let the boy love her.
Here is the trailer of "Save The Last Dance"

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post about how "Black Man White Woman in Dark Green Rowboat" by Russell Banks connected with the movie Save the Last Dance which was directed by Thomas Carter. I have seen this movie a few times and did not realize that it shared similarities with a short story I recently read. Even though I did not completely understand the short story, your connection has helped me get a better understanding of what it was about. I like the fact that you mentioned two different comparisons. One thing that caught my attention when reading this post was that you mentioned conflict. However, I think that you should have briefly talked about the encounters the couples faced.

  2. I really like reading this post and the connections you made between the movie and the short story. I have seen this movie countless times and agree that both the movie and story conflict is that of an interracial relationship. However, I can also put into account a personal experience of mine of my family actually accepting interracial relationships in our family. My older brother has a girlfriend who is of Italian and German decent and she is accepted and loved in my family. I am saying this because I believe that the short story's deeper meaning is to accept interracial couples into society.

Thank you for the insightful post.

  3. I absolutely love this movie, "Save the Last Dance". I really enjoyed reading your post and you made a great connection between the short story and this movie. I have seen this movie thousands of times so I can definitely see that it has everything to do with the man and woman being in an interracial relationship. In both "Black Man White Woman in Dark Green Rowboat" and "Save the Last Dance" they did both seem to be struggling with their relationships because of how judgmental society was based on the colors of each of their skins. Society felt that they should not have been together because she was white and he was black, they felt it just was not right. This, in turn, caused much conflict within their relationships which seemed to be the founding factor of "Save the Last Dance".

  4. First of all I want to say that I love the movie "Save the Last Dance" so when you made the connection with "The Black Man and White Women in Dark Green Rowboat" I automatically fell in love. Being that I seen this movie before the connections that you made where familiar to me. I was going to use this story but I could not find any good movies so I applaud you for this. Both the movie and story had problems with their relationship and the main reason was because of society not being ready for an interracial couple. You lost me toward the end of your media response when you started talking about abortions and man vs man conflict. But overall this was a good media response.

  5. I personally love the movie "Save the Last Dance." It is so awesome that you made such a good connection with the short story, "The Black Man and White Women in Dark Green Rowboat." This short story was my favorite out of all of the short stories that we have read. I think their was an abortion going on in this short story as well which I think would have really helped your media outtake if you included. Other than the topic of abortion, I think this is a great connection. Especially the fact that they both suffered from depression. Great Job!

  6. I completely understand and agree with the connection you made between “Black Man and White Women in Dark Green Rowboat” and “Save the Last Dance”. Both are great depictions of the struggle interracial relationships go through due to the pressure of society. Another small similarity that I found was just like the girls mother died in the movie, the girls dad died in the story so there is a bit of a relation that could contribute to both characters internal struggle as well. Over all I really think you did a good job at making the connections between the two and on a side note I’ve always loved that movie.

  7. I really enjoyed reading on your connection between the two stories, especially because we chose the same short story but took completely different routes connection wise. This is mainly because when I began reading the short story, I also thought of “Save the Last Dance” because of the interracial couple and the looks they received. However, I like how you elaborated on the two’s connection even further by sharing that both main female characters suffered from depression. When I read, I didn’t even think deep enough to realize that there was more in common than just the fact that they were both interracial couples. In all, this was a very good comparison.

  8. Wow, this was a really good connection. I really liked the movie "Save the Last Dance," and I also liked "Black Man and White Woman in Dark Green Rowboat." The fact that you were able to make a connection with the two pieces is really great. I mean, yes, I did watch that movie before reading the short story, but I never would have thought to make that connection on my own. Race is a very strong topic when it pertains to literary works and movies. It is a shame when people try to get in the way of a healthy relationship, just because of race. Shame I say, Shame, but good job on your post.
