In the
short story “The Story of An Hour” by
Kate Chopin the protagonist, Louise, is informed that her husband has passed in
a tragic train accident and becomes so overwhelmed and so lost that she
actually starts to find herself. Once
Louise was left to be alone and grieve for her loss, she started to feel
something other than sorrow and it was the feeling of freedom. For once she
does not have someone telling her what do and how to do it, “she would have no
one follow her” as Louise stated in the story. She has been so controlled by
her husband for so long that she is finally going to live on her on terms. As
Louise looks out the window she notices the world and that there is so much out
there for her to do, and see, and now she can, she does not have anyone holding
her down. Tragically Louise’s husband did not die, he is very much alive and as
he walks through the door in the end of the story which causes Louise to die.
The doctor claimed that “she died of overwhelming joy” but in reality she died
because as soon as she saw him there was a very rapid decline in joy and
probably a little bit of shock contributed to it as well. The connection I made to the
story was the song “Cry” by The
Veronicas. It is about a women being controlled in her relationship and
breaking free. “All my life you’ve had an opinion”, “all you do is hold me
down”, “You can't control my life”, “What would you say if I left today with no
regrets”. I am sure if that song was in Louise’s era, she would have blast it
in her house as she was putting on a nice outfit to go out and be the women
wants to be. Or maybe it would have given her inspiration to get out of the
relationship before hand. However, at one point or another Louise and the girl
in the song are feeling the same way about their relationships and in the end they
are both technically out of those relationships.
