The short story, “Hills like white
elephants” by Ernest Hemingway is about a man and women deciding whether or not
they should get an abortion. The man is pressuring her to make the decision,
although the woman is showing fear. She doesn’t know if she’s ready to be a
mom, but she doesn’t feel like an abortion is the way to go. She feels as
though their relationship isn’t going to be the same once the abortion is done.
It is unknown whether or not this couple got the abortion or not.
In the song, “The call” by Matt
Kennon, a teenage couple has taken a kiss too far. Unfortunately, the
girlfriend gets pregnant and they are in a horrible situation. At first, the boyfriend convinced his
girlfriend to have an abortion, she agreed. She was scared to death, but only
wanted what her boyfriend thought was best. When she went into the hospital to
have the operation, suddenly her boyfriend calls her and tells her that they
are going to keep the baby. She was so happy that he changed his mind.
The short story, “Hills like white
elephants” and the song, “The call” are both very similar. In the short story,
the man is putting himself before the baby and the girlfriend. In the song, the
boyfriend is doing the same thing. These two couples are both in horrible
situations and both of the men are reacting the same way. The two women are
also acting the same way; they are scared to tell the men how they really feel
about the sensitive subject. The audiences of the short story do not know
whether or not the women stood up to the man, it may or may not have happened.
Although in the song, the women never stood up to the boyfriend either, the boyfriend
came to his senses and decided not to go through with it.
I agree with your reaction to the story, “Hills like White Elephants” and the song “The Call”. They both show several similarities including the fact that the women show fear, and do not express their true feelings. The woman in “Hills like White Elephants” seems to go back and forth on her opinion, yet she does not really stay true to herself, she just relies her feelings towards what the man is feeling. They both need to step it up and figure out what they want, and what is best for them. The men in both the song and movie need to stop being selfish and start taking responsibility.
ReplyDeleteWhen I originally read the story, "Hills like White Elephants," I thought the woman was the one who wanted to get the abortion and the man did not. That being said, your connection between the short story and the song is strong. After listening to the song, I could see the similarities between the two for myself. I believe that the woman in both situations were afraid to voice their true opinions because of their fear of loosing their significant other. I completely agree that the men were being selfish and should have been more concerned with what the women thought since they are the ones who have to physically get the abortion or have the child.
