Oh Mother,Don't Sweat

I have found a very interesting connection between Zora Neale Hurston`s short story "Sweat" and Christina Aguilera`s song "Oh Mother". In "Sweat" the wife was the bread winner and the husband pretty much made a living of his wife.Sykes did not treat Delia as if she was his wife.He basically used her money that she worked for to give another woman better things in life. One day,Delia decided that maybe it is time for a change so instead of her accepting her husband's cruel behavior. For the first time in 15 years she stood up to him and it even shocked him.In the song, Christina talks about how her mother and also herself were in an abusive relationship.Similarly, Delia was also being abused in her 15 year marriage. This is not the first time Ms.Aguilera has referred to the abuse she and her mother went through. On her 2002 album Stripped, she has a song titled "I`m OK" where she mentions some of the tragic experiences. She stated that when she lived on Army bases as a child,it happened a lot. She also said MPs would come but a lot of them were doing the same things to their wives and kids.Even though both wives were victims in the relationship. However, the song has a difference because he didn't only abuse the mother.I think the revolution of both stories is that women were able to seek freedom.Christina mother said "it was the day he turned on the kids that she knew she had to leave him". Just like in "Sweat", both women realized that there came a point in there life where they wanted to change the circumstances that they lived under. When I first read the story I did not realize how much it relates to a song that is constantly playing on my phone.
