Facedown and Sweating

The short story “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston was about a woman who had been abused and mistreated by her husband. When she first married him they were in love, but after the first year he started to beat her. I am comparing this story to the song Facedown by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. The song is from the artist point of view. He sees that that girl is being beaten and wonders why she still stays with him. He states “still I’ll never understand why you hang around” That also made me think of the short story “Sweat” because when I was reading it I was wondering why the woman dealt with the abuse of the husband instead of getting out of the relationship.

He quotes “A pebble in the water has a ripple effect every action in this world will bear a consequence.” This basically means that he was telling the guy in the song that the way he’s treating the girl will have effects even after it happened, and that it also bears consequences. So that he means he shouldn’t expect to get away with being abusive and not take be held accountable for his actions. Delia also felt that same way. As she was laying in bad at night she was dwelling on the past and how he had changed from being a good man to the man he was now.  She quoted "Oh well, whatever goes over the Devil's back, is got to come under his belly. Sometime or ruther, Sykes, like everybody else, is going to reap his sowing." This statement is basically like many other old adages. Such as what’s done in the dark comes to the light. She means that just because he not getting caught right now that doesn’t mean that it won’t be recognized in the future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LNVOreafhk
