Understanding through Music

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD5uPZzBr5c

The two pieces that I compared together were "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin and a Clip of the movie Color Purple. Sonny's The clip that I'm comparing it too is a scene close to the end in which Sug Avery singing the song Sister which she wrote for Celie. As she's singing she hears the choir from the church across the river. The choir is singing the song God is Trying to Tell you Something.  In the middle of her performance she stops singing blues and begins singing the gospel music. She makes her way across the river and back into the church.
the reason that I connected these two was because I feel like Sug Avery and the Narrator from "Sonnys Blues" both came to an understanding through music. In "Sonny's Blues" the narrator was watching his brother perform and through music he could hear the struggle that not only his brother had went through, but the struggle that his mother and his father had all been through also. he could feel the struggle that he and wife had been dealt with. once he heard the music and could feel the struggle through the music he could finally understand his brother.

In the color purple Sug came to understanding that she didn't need blues anymore. for a long time she had been running from her gospel roots. however as she heard the singing from across the river she knew God was trying to tell her something and she couldn't run anymore. once she's there she hugs her father, the pastor, and tells him "See Daddy sinners have soul too".
although different understanding they were both still conveyed through the same method- music. it was something that they could both relate to because it evoked different emotions. for the narrator of "Sonnys Blues" it evoked emotions that allowed him to relate to his brother and understand him. in The Color Purple it evoked emotions that reminded her off home.
