Breakaway

Gilman’s, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, describes a woman who in the end just wanted to break free from all of the problems she was facing inside as well as on the outside within her society. After reading this story a few more times I realized that it reminds of a song by Kelly Clarkson called “Breakaway”. This song describes a person who wants to take chances, make changes and be free which reminds me of how the woman in the yellow wallpaper was feeling. In the end, all she wanted to do was be free and be able to do her and be herself without all of the controlling figures whom were around her.
This song reads, “I’d just stare out my window, dreaming of what could be and if I’d end up happy.” This lyric connected to the yellow wallpaper because in the story the woman would sit at the window and write out her feelings and how she was very much discouraged and tired, although she did not say this outright, she was somewhat depressed and sad as well. “Trying hard to reach out but when I tried to speak out, felt like no one could hear me.” This lyric connected to this story in a major way because in the yellow wallpaper the woman was continuously trying to express to her husband how she was feeling but he would not hear of it. She wanted to move out of that room with the yellow wallpaper and, more importantly, she wanted to write. Not only did she feel that she had no say so and no voice within her marriage, but she also felt that she had no voice within society. The fact that her husband did not allow her to write, and when she did write it was in secret, caused her to feel that she had no voice within society either because no one could hear what she had to say verbally or through her writings.
“Take a chance, make a change, and breakaway out of the darkness and into the sun.” The story came to an end when the woman finally seemed to break the woman free who was in the wallpaper whom turned out to be her herself. At last, she felt her first sense of freedom. She broke away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKCGBv65w_M

  1. I can definitely see where the women relate. In the song, she seems sad and frustrated as if she needs to break free, or in this case breakaway. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, she just wants people to believe her, and trust what she’s feeling and saying. In the line of the song that includes, “Take a chance, make a change…” it resembles her taking a chance in writing, for once believing in herself, and wanting to make a change in society and the role woman were to play. When she was above her husband who was lying on the floor, which was her breaking free, and away.

  2. I hadn’t realized how much this song actually resembles the story; this is a great connection. The part in the song that says, “Trying hard to reach out, but when I tried to speak out, felt like no one could hear me”, is how the woman in “The Yellow Wallpaper” must have felt. Her husband, who is also her doctor, continuously disregarded her desires as unimportant.
The woman in the story wasn’t allowed to work and was restricted from writing in her journal, which seemed to be the only way for her to express how she truly felt. This ties back to the message of the desire to break away.

  3. Oh my goodness, i think you did a great job finding something in the media that related to the story. Although I think that both of the songs have different meanings behinds them, if you interpret them in the way you have described they make perfect sense.
I’d like to point out that in the music video Kelly Clarkson is running around a dark forest “looking for herself” much like the protagonist in the yellow wallpaper. At the end as well Kelly Clarkson in her own way breaks down, much different than the protagonist but I would definitely like to mention that the correlation is worth mentioning. Great analysis!
